What is a Chalazion?

Chalazions, often confused with a stye (hordeolum), is a different type of eyelid bump. While a stye is typically an infection of an eyelash follicle, chalazion arises from a blocked meibomian gland, which produces the oil that keeps your eyes moist. When the gland becomes clogged, it can lead to inflammation and the formation of a firm, painless lump on the eyelid.

Causes of Chalazion: A Closer Look

Chalazion is usually the result of:

When these oil-producing glands become obstructed, the oil can't flow freely, leading to gland enlargement and chalazion formation.

A chalazion may develop due to bacteria entering the blocked gland, causing infection and inflammation.
